Alice sits almost perfectly between Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Laredo, and McAllen, which is exactly how the city earned its nickname. It's been a natural stopping point and distribution center for the region for over a hundred years — and it's just as easy a stop for you.

The town was named for Alice King, daughter of legendary rancher Richard King, whose King Ranch legacy still shapes the brush country all around this part of South Texas.

Music History

Birthplace of Tejano Music

In 1946, Armando Marroquín of Alice and Paco Betancourt of San Benito founded Ideal Records right here in town — one of the first labels to record Tejano artists exclusively. Legends like Lydia Mendoza, Isidro "El Indio" López, and Tony de la Rosa all recorded through Alice-based labels, and the tradition carried on through Freddie Records and Hacienda Records in later decades.

In 2001, the Texas Legislature made it official, naming Alice the birthplace of Tejano music. Today, the Tejano ROOTS Hall of Fame Museum honors that legacy with exhibits, instruments, and stage memorabilia from the genre's pioneers — well worth a visit during your stay.
